A free Excel workbook for building a client's income and expenditure summary from their bank statements. No sign-up needed.
What's in the workbook
- How to use: a one-page guide to filling it in.
- Transactions: paste in the date, description and amount for each transaction, then choose a category from a drop-down list of 21.
- Summary: money in, money out and the monthly average for every category, grouped into income, committed outgoings, living costs, discretionary spending and money moving. The number of months is worked out from the dates you paste in, and you can override it.
How to use it
- Export or copy the client's transactions from each statement into the Transactions sheet. Money in as a positive amount, money out as a negative amount.
- Choose a category for each line from the drop-down list. Use Transfers for money moving between the client's own accounts, so it isn't counted as income or spending.
- Check the months covered on the Summary sheet, then read off the category totals and monthly averages.
- Review anything a lender is likely to ask about. Our guide to categorising a bank statement for a mortgage application lists the usual ones.
The categories
The template uses the same 26 categories ClearStatement starts with, so summaries made either way read the same:
| Group | Categories |
|---|---|
| Income | Income / salary, Benefits & other income |
| Committed outgoings | Mortgage / rent, Ground rent & service charge, Council tax, Utilities, Phone, broadband & TV, Credit commitments, Debt solutions (DMP, IVA, DRO), Life & protection insurance, Other insurance, Child maintenance, Childcare & education, Adult care |
| Living costs | Groceries, Transport & travel, Clothing & personal care, Household & furnishings |
| Discretionary spending | Eating out & takeaways, Leisure, subscriptions & holidays, Gambling & crypto |
| Money moving | Pensions & investments, Savings, Transfers, Cash withdrawals, Refunds |
Skip the typing
The template saves you building the spreadsheet, but you still have to copy and categorise every line. ClearStatement reads PDF and CSV statements, categorises every transaction in your browser and gives you the same summary, plus an itemised Excel export and a PDF report, in seconds. Statement files are never uploaded.
